Astro Boy is getting a Reboot


Astro Boy is coming back!  It was announced at the Annecy Festival’s International Animation Film Market (MIFA) on Wednesday.  Shibuya Productions, Tezuka Productions, and Caribara Animation are joining forces to create a television reboot of the popular character created by Osamu Tezuka.  The Astro Boy series debuted as a manga book in 1952 and was made into a television show in 1960.  There were 2 remakes in 1980 and 2003 and a movie by Summit Entertainment in 2009.

According to Variety, there will be 26 half hour segments, mixing 2D and 3D animation.

Action-packed, and made up of 26 half-hour segs, skein will mix 2D and CG animation and target new generation of 8-12-year-old kids who do not know the show.

The new show will be in a present-day setting while taking the best of the original characters and elements and adding new modern characters and elements.

There are also plans to do a  Little Astro Boy series as well.

With Yomiuri TV Enterprise, Tezuka Productions is also developing “Little Astro Boy,” a short format five-to-seven minute edutainment series aimed at three-to-five year old pre-school tykes.


I am excited about this and can’t wait to see the new series and I know my kids will love this as well.
