So the Disney Infinity webcast has come and gone. And as a fan of classic Disneyana, I have to say that I’m a little underwhelmed.
See, the next version of Disney Infinity features mostly Marvel comics characters. And while that’s all fine and dandy, there has already been a slew of Marvel games geared toward younger gamers, like Marvel Super Hero Squad and LEGO Marvel Super Heroes. There was a offhanded mention of more Disney characters on the way at some point, but this webcast was strictly about the Marvel Comics IP.
Oh, for a Marvel game it looks just fine. The starting lineup includes Avengers characters like Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk and Black Widow. Cities are bigger, there are more modes added to the toybox, costumes can be changed and characters can be upgraded. All previous Disney Infinity figures reportedly work on Disney Infinity 2.0 (ala Skylanders) and more Marvel characters seem to be on the way, including Loki and the Guardians of the Galaxy.
And I know that Disney owns Marvel. But when I think of Disney I’m thinking of — oh, I don’t know — Donald Duck? Or a host of sadly neglected Disney movie characters (Elliott the Dragon please!)
But hey — figures of classic Disney characters probably won’t sell to the masses, so Marvel it is. And likely Star Wars after that.
So if this seems like it’ll be up your alley, Disney Infinity 2.0: Marvel Super Heroes is headed your way in a few months.
