The Force Awakens isn’t the only new Star Wars movie coming out from Disney/Lucasfilms. A new Rogue One movie will be coming out in December of 2016. Details for the new movie were revealed to attendees of the 2015 Celebration event in Anaheim, CA this past weekend.
It looks like this movie will also have a female lead (Felicity Jones) and that rocks hard! It will be directed by Gareth Edwards, who also directed Godzilla (Yay!)
The new Rogue One movie will take place between Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and Episode IV: A New Hope.
Here are some more details from CNN
A group of rebels go on a rogue mission to steal plans for the Death Star. Jones will play a rebel soldier.
The movie won’t begin shooting until this summer so the footage shown in the teaser — including a glimpse of the Death Star — won’t necessarily appear in the finished product.
Edwards told the crowd that Jones is a “Star Wars” fan and dropped everything to take on the lead role.
Producer Kathleen Kennedy said “Rogue One” was one of the first pitches she received after becoming president of Lucasfilm in 2012, and she could not turn it down.
Yeah! Who wouldn’t drop everything?! I know I would!
We are in LUCK because Rogue One is one of SEVERAL planned Spin-off movies in the works. These are in ADDITION to the new Trilogy. The new films are being called “Anthologies” and not “prequels” or “sequels.” (which are now accepted terms. My mom got in trouble for using the word “sequel” when she was in college because it was not a “real word”)
At the panel they ran a “teaser trailer” of sorts (as I don’t believe they have started filming yet) The leaked “trailer” keeps being taken down, but I found this description of it on slashfilm.com
A card with “December 2016″ fades in and out, with a sound that is somewhere between a slow Inception horn and a lightsaber. Then a familiar voice: Alec Guinness as Obi-Wan Kenobi, saying “For more than a thousand generations, the Jedi Knights were the guardians of peace and justice in the old Republic. Before the dark times. Before the Empire.”
As he speaks, the teaser fades in on a tracking shot, high up through a forested canyon. We hear a TIE Fighter pass overhead, and see the ship move forward into frame as the camera continues to push forward. We see, dominating the sky, the outline of what could be a moon. But that’s no moon, it’s a… well, you know what it is. The Death Star. Music swells and the screen goes black. The Rogue One logo comes up, and we hear radio voices, like troops communicating during combat. The chatter gets more frantic and loud as light strobes on the logo, which finally breaks up as the sound cuts out.
Here are some concept art pieces that were shown:
she almost reminds me of Mara Jade 🙁

I am excited about the new Rogue One as I used to love the Rogue Squadron books by Michael Stackpole. I know…I know…the expanded universe doesn’t exist anymore. But I am excited they are doing more with the Rogues.
Scheduled release is December 16, 2016! So we have The Force Awakens on December 15, 2015 and then Rogue One in 2016! Happy Holidays!
